A dystopian novella for YA, set far into a bleak future.

Seventy one years after a global nuclear war, life trudges on in a rotting, decaying limp, while a tiny remnant of humanity live and die on a sick planet that is quickly turning into a deserted effigy. The sun is permanently hidden behind thick red clouds, while strong winds blow incessantly across fields that have turned to ash. And in all this despair and desolation, young Ben fights on in the shadow of a mysterious tower that has remained impenetrable for decades. Soon however, something is about to change.

A compulsive story of the highest order - Paul Freer
I have just read The Taàr by John A. Bonello, this is an author I have never read before. But I am left wishing that I had discovered John Bonello a lot earlier. This short story is excellent. He weaves a marvellous tale of the aftermath of a nuclear doomsday, where the handful of survivors cling to life on a knife edge of existence, eating and drinking only what they are able to scavenge deep in the ruins of cities where precious canned food lies hidden. But there is the 'Tower', a giant sealed edifice. A dying Utopia. Can they all survive? One young boy is the catalyst to this. The story is spell binding in that this is a future we have all so narrowly avoided many times during the arms race, at the mercy of a few powerful men. And still live in the shadow of a real threat. Bonello has written a compulsive story of the highest order, one that is so believable that it sends a chill down your spine. Then lifts your heart with hope. I am seeking a second part to this great novelette, also his other work. Congratulations John Bonello and thanks for the pleasure I had reading it.
A terrific read for young and adults alike - Maryanne
Worth a read as it's fast and entertaining. The story is well written and it shows that a lot of thought was put into it. In its simplicity it's diverse. A terrific read for young and adults alike.
It's more than that. - Lyta
There is no fault in wanting to be somewhere else, somewhere better, somewhere your heart can rest. And this is what this story is all about. Finding a better life, for a people. A young boy ventures to give his people the promised land, he does it all out of love, living by his own doctrine and not the one imposed on him by those who raised him. He suffers inwardly for lost family, yet he proceeds, full of courage and full of hope, ready to sacrifice it all - but he's not the Chosen One, there's nothing of the sort in this wonderfully written tale. There's more, much much more than a tale. It's concise.
